Objective To compare the effects of different sutures materials on the healing and aesthetic outcomes of superficial facialwounds treated in the emergency department. Methods A total of 180 patients with superficial facial wounds admitted to The First Af.filiated Hospital of PLA Air Force Medical University from January 2019 to December 2022 were enrolled and randomly assigned via arandom number table to a silk suture group (n=90) and an absorbable suture group (n=90). Following standard surgical debridement, both groups underwent interrupted percutaneous suture with their respective suture materials. From postoperative week 1 to month 6,suture knot reactions, wound healing time, wound healing grade, complications, and aesthetic satisfaction reported by patients or theirfamilies were compared between the two groups. Results The incidence of knot reaction [18.89% (17/90) vs. 40.00% (36/90)] and wound complication rate [13.33% (12/90) vs. 38.89% (35/90)] were significantly lower in the absorbable suture group than in the silk suture group (P<0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in wound healing time or wound healing grade between the two groups (P>0.05). Aesthetic satisfaction was significantly higher in the absorbable suture group [88.89% (80/90) vs. 77.78% (70/90), P< 0.05].Conclusion Compared with silk suture, absorbable suture are associated with less knot reaction, fewer complications, and bet.ter aesthetic outcomes for superficial facial wounds repaired in the emergency setting.
