| Objective To explore the mediating effect of weight-adjusted waist circumference index (WWI) on the risk of obstructivesleep apnea (OSA) and depressive symptoms, and to provide data for the prevention and remission of depressive symptoms. Methods Cross-sectional study. From May to October 2024, a total of 11,343 participants aged ≥ 20 years were selected from the National healthand nutrition examination survey (NHANES) in 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2015-2016, and 2017-2018. The risk of OSA was evaluated re-spectively by using the sleep health questionnaire (STOP-BANG Questionnaire), and patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was usedto assess the severity of depressive symptoms. WWI was calculated based on waist circumference and weight. Correlation analysis andregression analysis were used to explore the relationship between OSA risk, WWI and depressive symptoms, and bootstrap test wasused to test the mediating effect between variables and WWI.Results A total of 11 343 subjects were included in this study, including5 956 males (52.51%) and 5 387 females (47.49%). 893 (7.87%) were considered to have depression. Compared with non-depressionpatients, depression patients had a larger proportion of women, smoking and drinking, and higher WWI [124.38 (111.61, 138.67) cm/kg vs. 119.51 (107.63, 132.13) cm/kg,P<0.05]. There was a positive correlation between OSA risk and depressive symptoms (r= 0.13, P<0.001). OSA risk score was positively correlated with WWI (r=0.51, P<0.001), and WWI was positively correlated with depres-sive symptoms (r=0.08, P<0.001). WWI significantly mediated the association between OSA risk and depressive symptoms [effect size=0.05, 95%CI: (0.02, 0.08)].Conclusion Both OSA risk and WWI are the influencing factors of depressive symptoms, and WWI playsa partial mediating role between OSA risk and depressive symptoms. |
