Objective To investigate the short-term effects of sustained close reading of paper and electronic texts with the same con-tent on macular microcirculation in healthy young people. Methods In this prospective study, optical coherence tomography angiogra-phy (OCTA) was used to measure superficial capillary plexus vessel density (SVD), deep capillary plexus vessel density (DVD), choroi-dal capillary vessel density (CVD) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in the macular region before and after 1 h of reading papertext and electronic text in 30 (60-eye) healthy university students enrolled in Weifang Medical College from May 2021 to October 2021. Results After quantitative analysis, reading paper text for 1 hour, SVD decreased in the center concave [(18.3±7.4)%, (17.4±7.2)%]and in the area regions of the paracentral concave [(50.2±4.2)%,(48.0±5.5)%], with statistically significant differences (Z=2.93, P = 0.021; Z=3.25, P = 0.007).While after reading the e-text for 1 h, the CVD decreased [(75.8±4.1)%, (74.7±4.9)%] (t=2.36, P = 0.022); the SFCT decreased (289.0±6.2, 280.7±6.6)(t=2.35, P = 0.022).Conclusions Continuous close reading of paper text for 1 h caused a short-term decrease in superficial retinal blood flow in the macula; continuous close reading of electronic text for 1 h caused a short-term decrease in choroidal blood flow in the macula. This can increase the incidence of some fundus diseases.
